Nos llegó en un VHS venido de Francia, bailando una variación de Paquita recortada a la que le faltaban un par de fouettés italianos. Durante años ni siquiera supimos su nombre -ojo, no existía internet- y por sus piernas impresionantes empezamos a llamarle “la mosquito”. No sabíamos nada de ella, pero poníamos sus escasos segundos de danza a cámara lenta para preguntarnos cómo con una glissade tan pequeña podría hacer ese espectacular jeté a la segunda. Mi abuelo, en su clarividencia de profano, en vez de admirarse con sus lineas dijo: “Pobre chica, tiene las piernas muy torcidas. ¿Le dolerán mucho?”.
Luego ella y nosotros nos olvidamos de sus piernas, sepultados por su maestría en todo lo que atacaba. Libre ya hasta de la Ópera de París, Sylvie Guillem ha llegado hasta el infinito y más allá. Recientemente, y me cuesta creerlo, tuve que escribir de refilón sobre su retirada de los escenarios y me han entrado escalofríos. ¿Dejarán las demás bailarinas de levantar por fin tanto las piernas?

We saw her in a French VHS, dancing a variation from Paquita which was missing two Italian fouettes. For years we didn’t even know her name -it was before the internet era- and because of her incredible legs, we started calling her “the mosquito”. We didn’t know anything about her, but we watched over and over those few seconds on film, in slow motion, trying to find out how she could jump so beautifully in that jeté à la seconde from such a tiny glissade. My grandfather, wise and normal, didn’t admire her, but said: “Poor girl, her legs are totally twisted. Will she have much pain?”
Then we -and her- finally forgot about her legs… because of the way she mastered anything she did. Once she run away from Paris Opera, Sylvie Guillem reached the infinity and beyond. A few weeks ago -and it’s hard for to me believe- I had to write glancinly about her retirement and that made me shiver. Will finally the other dancers start to limit their legs extension?
