Alerta, que viene Galella

La inauguración de la exposición Ron Galella: Paparazzo extraordinaire! me ha redescubierto el arte de la oportunidad. Uno puede estar toda una vida en posición de ataque, esperando a que pase ese instante mágico ante sus ojos… y no saber reaccionar. Galella sí sabe y su trabajo lo demuestra. Para su cámara era ahora o nunca. Y para él siempre era ahora. Para otros siempre es nunca.

Sus fotografías pillan ese momento en que Brando no era Brando, sino un tipo enorme, fascinante y con ganas de dar un puñetazo al fotógrafo ese que le apuntaba; al final se lo dio, claro. Si Jackie cruzaba las calles con el pelo revuelto en la cara, allí estaba Ron; cada uno en su casa y Ron la de todos. La exposición está dividida entre el Círculo de Bellas Artes y la madrileña tienda Loewe de Gran Vía, porque la firma española patrocina esta porción de PhotoEspaña 2011. Fue formidable la transformación que sufrió la tienda para la inauguración; impecable todo, como siempre, con una iluminación preciosa que te transportaba en el tiempo y el espacio. Buena compañía y muchas risas.

Ron estuvo fotografiándose con quien quisiera; y yo ahora que por fin he recuperado mi cámara de fotos, me la olvidé en casa. Soy paparazzo de la vida, no de la fotografía, está claro.

At the opening of the exhibition Ron Galella: Paparazzo extraordinaire! I’ve rediscovered the art of timing. You can spend a lifetime in attack position, waiting for that magic moment passing before your eyes … and not knowing that THAT was your only opportunity. Galella does know how to react and his work proves it. For his camera was now or never. And he was always ready. Other people are never on time.

His photographs caught that exact moment when Brando wasn’t Brando, but a big charming guy ready to punch that photographer who was focusing on him; at the end Brando did punch him, of course. If Jackie crossed the street with wild hair on her face, Ron was there; each to his own and Ron watching over everyone. The exhibition is located between the Círculo de Bellas Artes and the Loewe store in Gran Via (Madrid), since the Spanish luxury brand is sponsoring this portion of PhotoEspaña 2011. It was tremendous the transformation of the store for the opening act; everything perfect, as always, with a beautiful lighting that could transport you in time and space. Good company and laughter.

Ron let everyone to take photographs with him, but now that I’ve finally got my camera back, I forgot it at home. I’m a paparazzo of life, not of the camara, for sure.
