Black out

Según los astrónomos, acabamos de vivir la noche más oscura de los últimos 500 años. Qué va. La noche más oscura es la del alma, y no sólo para Juan de la Cruz. Esa que no deja un resquicio de amanecer. La noche del otro día, por muy negra que fuera, tenía fecha de caducidad. Así que no sería tan oscura.

Dicen que un buen teatro se distingue por la velocidad y la precisión en alcanzar un buen oscuro en su escenario. Lo que llamamos un black-out: un negro total e inmediato. En el Teatro Mariinsky, por ejemplo, el oscuro es tan oscuro que por allá arriba viven cientos de murciélagos. Sin embargo, el ojo del público es un canalla porque se va acostumbrando a la oscuridad de la sala y en cuanto nos descuidamos, es capaz de ver a la bailarina corriendo como si le persiguiera el diablo para alcanzar las cajas antes de que vuelva la luz.

A los bailarines nos enseñan a abandonar el escenario sin perder la compostura jamás, incluso durante los oscuros. Por si acaso meten la luz antes de tiempo, pero también porque no nos fiamos de los black-outs. Hay que mantenerse firme, con la cabeza erguida y aguantando la postura. La oscuridad total sólo existe en el alma y, créanme, ni siquiera esa es eterna.

The darkest night doesn’t have a slight glimmer of sunrise. The other night was very dark, but it had an expiration date, so it was not so dark.

People say that you can recognise a good theater by the speed and accuracy to get dark. That’s what we call a black- out: a total and immediate darkness. At the Mariinsky Theatre, for example, the black-out is so dark that on top of the stage live hundreds of bats. However, the eye of the spectator is a real traitor because it’s done to the darkness of the auditorium and if we are not careful enough, they’ll see the dancer running away to reach the wings before there is light again .

As dancers, we all learn how to leave the stage maintaining our composure even when the stage is dark. First, because the light could came back before expected, but also because we don’t trust in black-outs. We must stand firm, with our head straight and holding the pose. Total darkness exists only in the soul, and believe me, not even that one is eternal.
