Day 6_Dances at a Gathering

[People of the world, the Coronavirus has locked us up. But not only will it not be able to take us, but we will make the most of the lockdown. Here’s my idea for the day.]

Dances at a Gathering would not be Dances at a Gathering without Petipa, without Fokine, without Vaganova, without Balanchine having left Russia, without Jerome Robbins -the choreographer of the ballet- having met Bernstein and without New York being New York. I wouldn’t be sharing it now either if I wasn’t locked up at home, that’s the way it is.

I was a child the first time I saw this solo, danced by Helgi Tomasson. Here, danced by Mathieu Ganio. It was said that this ballet captures what happens when dancers dance for themselves. I found that very strange, fascinating. As fascinating as all the works created by Jerome Robbins.
