Increíble, la gente de Google. Me asombran. Hoy celebran el 117 aniversario del nacimiento de Martha Graham dedicando su logotipo a la coreógrafa estadounidense. Abran la página principal del buscador y déjense seducir por las preciosas imágenes que configuran las seis letras de su nombre. Qué barbaridad. 
Hace muchos años, en Nueva York, pude presenciar la Gala que se celebró en el City Center Theater unos meses después de la muerte de Graham. Fue una cosa tan aparatosa que hasta Natalia Makarova bailó Incense, un solo creado en 1906. Todo un acontecimiento. Sin embargo, Martha Graham -de quién, quizás sin motivo, admiro más su legado pedagógico que el coreográfico- no me cautivaría de verdad hasta algunos años más tarde. Alguien me regaló el famoso libro de Barbara Morgan (firmado por la propia fotógrafa; lo conservo como oro en paño, he de reconocer) con esas vibrantes imágenes que me explicaron con detalle; el qué, el cómo y los entresijos de cada disparo. Increíble todo lo que esconden. También por esa época me llegaron las anécdotas que contaba Pearl Lang, la primera mujer que bailó los papeles de la propia Graham; Martha, según contaba Lang, se preparaba cada noche como si fuera a salir al escenario y bailaba toda la obra entre cajas, casi a centímetros de donde defendía Lang su lugar en la escena.
Así era ella. Gracias al recordatorio de Google, hoy voy a volver a ver Night Journey. Feliz cumpleaños, Martha.

Many years ago in New York, I attended to a Gala at the City Center Theater, a few months after Graham’s death. It was so ostentatious that even Natalia Makarova danced Incense, a solo created in 1906. An extraordinary event. However, Martha Graham -I admire her teaching system more than her choreographic legacy; it’s probably my mistake- did not catch my full atention until some years later. Someone gave me the famous book by Barbara Morgan (signed by the photographer herself; I keep it as a treasure, I must admit) with those vibrant images that my friend explained to me in detail, telling me what, how and the ins and outs of each shot. It’s amazing what they hide. Also by that time I could enjoy Pearl Lang’s anecdotes; she was the first woman who danced the roles of Graham herself. Martha, as Lang said, used to get ready every night as performing again, and she danced all the ballet in the wings, almost inches away from where Lang defended her place on stage.
That was Martha Graham. Thanks to the reminder of Google, today I will watch Night Journey, which I love. Happy birthday, Martha.
